The gospel is the greatest story ever told. It has the power to change lives on the spot. In short, it is the story of God’s loving pursuit of our hearts back to Himself.
If you are not a Christian and want to know how to begin a relationship with God through forgiveness of your sins or are just curious to know what the Christian gospel is, then this is for you.
The Bible tells us what the gospel is in 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verses 1-4,
“Now I make known to you brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures . . . “
How it all began…
From the beginning God desired a personal relationship with each one of us. He created us to be in fellowship with Him and everything was made for His glory. The world was perfect!
Then the Bible says that Adam and Eve decided to disobey God and do their life their way. That is called sin, and it broke the relationship between God and not just Adam and Eve but all humanity. This means that we have all offended God. We have all broken His law. Therefore, Paul tells us in in the New Testament that we are all sinners (Rom. 3:23). Passed down from generation to generation was a “brokenness” what we call a sin nature. Because of this, we are separated from God and are dead in our sins. We cannot please God or restore that relationship no matter how hard we try to do the right things. The only way break through the barrier our sin created between us and God was by God’s intervention. God broken through from His side! Seeing that we all were without hope Jesus stepped out of heaven to pursue restoration for us.
He came to us…
Jesus, who is God in flesh, lived on the earth sinless first to reveal to us who God is but secondly to take our sins on Himself – on the cross. He died in our place. He paid the penalty of breaking the Law of God that should have been our punishment. He fully satisfied the law of God the Father by dying on the cross.
It is only through Jesus that we can escape the penalty of our sin and more importantly restore our relationship with the Father. But the story doesn’t end there. When Jesus died for us He went to the grave. However, the grave could not hold Him. On the third day, Jesus rose from that grave to prove that He had in fact defeated sin, death, and the grave. That same power that rose Jesus lives in all those who place their faith and trust in Him. Therefore, the relationship with the Father has been restored, sin has been defeated, and we now have the power to say “no” to sin in the future. Added to that wonderful truth is the fact that Jesus, once He ascended back into heaven, now sits at the right-hand of the Father interceding on our behalf.
Invite Jesus into your heart…
Would you like to begin a relationship with Christ? You can do that right now through prayer. Understand, there is no special prayer or formula, but it is communicating with God and sharing with Him your desire to surrender your life to Him. Again, this is not “the prayer” only an example of what you might want to voice to Him:
“Lord Jesus. I confess that I am a sinner, that I have lied, thought evil in my heart, and fallen short of your perfect will. Please forgive me of my sins. I trust in what you have done on the cross as the payment for my sins. I believe that you died on the cross, were buried, and rose from the dead for me. Please forgive me of my sin and be the Lord of my life. Jesus, I surrender my heart and my life to You. Thank you for rescuing me!”
If you prayed something like that and meant it with all of your understanding then you are saved. God has restored your relationship through the work of Jesus, not on your own merit but by grace alone.
Your Next Step is to tell others about your commitment to Jesus. The Bible says, “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved”. We would love to celebrate with you and encourage you in your new journey of faith.
